Bellevue, WA — Vulnerable children in Seattle and South King County will benefit from the award of a $10,000 grant to Powerful Schools by the CFOS Foundation.
Powerful Schools partners with preschools, public school districts, families, and the community to provide enrichment programs that dramatically increase the chance that children will succeed in school and graduate. “We really appreciate this support from the CFOS Foundation, ” said Tre’ Maxie, Executive Director of Powerful Schools. “We know that by the time struggling students reach third grade their chances of academic success will significantly improve if we are able to help them transition smoothly into elementary school, achieve grade-level reading and remain motivated and engaged in their education. This funding will help ensure academic success for local students.”
Powerful Schools focuses on preschool and elementary school children because studies show that academic and social gains made in the early school years often persist beyond pre-school and elementary school, well into a child’s high school and post-secondary years. However, when children leave elementary school below grade level, their likelihood of future academic success, particularly graduation from high school, significantly decreases. Many of the schools served by Powerful Schools have large populations of children from low-income families and thus have access to less resources than schools in wealthier communities. Unfortunately, the great inequity in access to resources affects what schools can do on their own to serve the needs of all children.
Since 1991, Powerful Schools has delivered stimulating, multi-year, school-wide academic programs integrated into public elementary schools in Seattle and South King County. During the 2012-13 school year, Powerful Schools is working with more than 4,300 children and their families in 12 Seattle and South King County elementary schools and six CDSA preschools.
